How to remove your iCloud account from your iPhone remotely.

Whether you have lost your phone on a night out or sold your phone for some extra cash, trying to figure out how to remove your iCloud account from your iPhone can be a frustrating task.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to remove your iCloud account remotely:

Step 1: Log into your iCloud account.

You can log into your iCloud account from any device with an internet connection. Simply visit www.icloud.com and fill in your Apple ID and password.

Step 2: Two-Factor Authentication

Depending on how your iCloud was set-up, it might require you to enter an additional code. This will be sent to the phone number linked to your iCloud account or if you have another Apple product near by – the code will simply pop-up on that device.

Step 3: Select the ‘Find my iPhone’ icon

Once you are logged in, click on the ‘Find my iPhone’ icon to proceed to the next steps. You might be required to enter in your iCloud password again at this stage (Apple is very pedantic about security)!

Step 4: Select your Device

Select the ‘All Devices’ drop-down menu and select the device you would like to erase from your iCloud account.

Step 5: Erase the Device

A pop up box of the device will appear on your screen with three different options. Select the ‘Erase iPhone’ option and then proceed to select next and then done.

Step 6: Remove from your Account

A message will then pop up indicating that the ‘Erase Process’ has started, all you have to do is select ‘OK’. You will then be prompted with a ‘Remove from Account’ message – select this option and the device will be successfully removed from your device list on your iCloud account.

How To Backup & Reset Your iPhone Or Samsung Before Selling It On Flip Phone.

So you’ve set your collection date for tomorrow, you now need to back up your data and factory reset your phone before our courier collects it in the morning. Here’s how to go about doing and the different steps involved.

We are gathered here today to explore the best way to back up your iPhone or Samsung and factory reset it to ensure maximum security and privacy over your data. Another important factor is the time saving and hassle in entering in important data manually in your upgraded phone.

Use an iCloud Backup When You Have An iPhone.

To backup your data (photos, videos, apps, data etc), simply sign into your iCloud and make use of the free 5GB of storage. If you require more than 5GB (quite common) you’ll need to upgrade to a paid plan of 50GB all the way to 2TB. Go ahead and connect to a Wi-Fi network > Settings [Your Name] > Tap iCloud > iCloud Backup. To see the progress level or see if the backup is complete, simply repeat the steps. Settings> Your Name> iCloud> iCloud backup. By clicking “back up now” you will be able to see the most recent back up available by the date/time stamp. Go through this same process to keep your backed-up content updated and to ensure that no data gets lost due to technical or Internet glitches.

Manually back up your iPhone with iTunes

If you chose not to use iCloud or do not want to pay for the extra storage, you can make use of iTunes on your Macbook/iMac. Here you can back up and store all your data for free with no storage cap. The only negative here is the backups are not automated, you will need to do these manually. Simply open iTunes and plug your iPhone into your computer. Click “Allow/Trust” where it asks your permission to trust the computer. Select your iPhone in the sidebar and click “Back Up Now”

Factory resetting your iPhone.

Navigate to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. It will ask you to enter you Apple iD password to proceed.

Use Samsung Cloud When You Have A Samsung Phone

Here you will be using Samsung Cloud and you will need a Samsung account for your phone.

This option to back up your data is automatic but there is the option to change this in settings, to manual. On auto, once a day, when your phone is being charged and connected to Wi-Fi, it will back up. These back ups happen when there is no activity detected by the phone for more than an hour.

To use this option, go to Settings > Clouds & Accounts > Samsung Cloud > Back up my data. Alternatively click on Settings > Cloud & Accounts > Backup &reset > Back up my data. Switch on every item you have chosen to back up, in the settings menu. Click “Back up now”. To upgrade your Samsung device storage, go to Settings > Cloud & Accounts >  Samsung Cloud > Manage cloud storage > Change storage plan.

Use Your Google Account

In the case you do not have a Samsung account but rather a Google account, use this option to back up your data. Simple sign into your Google account, Google will automatically start a backup of your phone.

To check Google is busy backing your phone data up, click “Settings” and click the search engine bar at the top. Look for “Back Up” and select the first choice that shows up — this first choice would differ based on the type of Android phone you have.

If you do not have a Samsung account, but have a Google Account instead, consider using the latter as a platform to store all your phone data. Sign into your Google Account (if you have not done so already) on your phone. Once you are logged into your Google account, Google would back up your phone data, such as your phone display preferences, passwords, Wi-Fi networks and even your Android settings details, automatically. Google Photos would also back your existing photos and videos up. To ascertain that Google is indeed backing your phone data up, head towards “Settings” and click the search engine bar at the top. Look for “Back Up” and select the first choice that shows up — this first choice would differ based on the type of Samsung/Android version your phone is running. If your phone shows “Back up to Google Drive” at the top of the screen, ensure that it is already toggled on. Otherwise, when your phone displays “Automatic restore” and “Back up my data”, double-check to ensure that both are toggled on.

Log out/delete your account synced to your phone

From Settings > Accounts and backup > Accounts> Select Account > Personal info > Click more options > Click remove account > Click remove.
Enter your password and then click OK. Done!

Be sure to remove your SIM! Here at Flip Phone, we aim to provide a safe, free and hassle free experience for all our customers who are selling their phone!

Covid-19 Precautions: Safe, Contact Free Collection & Delivery

Selling your Phone

Here at Flip Phone, we’re closely monitoring the Coronavirus pandemic and are committed to doing our bit to flatten the curve and keep you safe. We have implemented strict protocols and services when it comes to selling your device with us. Together with our courier partners, all collections are safe and contact-free, from your door to ours. This service is implemented across the entire country on all orders and is completely free. Our internal staff follow strict measures in line with the recommendations issued by the WHO and we are following the guidelines under the current lockdown stage, set out by the national authority.

The Contactless Collection Process:

  1. On arrival, the driver will ring the bell or intercom and announce their arrival and their intention to complete a collection. They will also explain the goods are to be placed on the ground of the premises and for the customer to walk back to a safe sanitary distance (1,5m). This will allow the courier to safely pick up the parcel. He will then place the pre-filled waybill down and move back 1.5 m to allow the customer to sign acceptance of collection.
  2. Our couriers no longer pass the driver’s scanner to the customer to capture a signature. Instead the driver will keep the scanner and after selecting the ‘contactless delivery’ option, they will request the name of the signatory which they will key into the name field on the handheld device. The driver will not capture the signature of the recipient on the device.
  3. Please remember to wash your hands before and after a collection. We also ask that you avoid direct contact with the courier, such as handshakes. This process applies to all collections and will remain in place until further notice.

At Flip Phone HQ

All of our support staff are working remotely, and our processing and dispatching operation is running with a skeleton staff complement. Thanks to the systems we’ve built over time, this wasn’t a disruptive change.

When a phone arrives

In addition to following all of the procedures set out for contactless collection above, when a phone arrives at Flip Phone, our technicians receives it wearing a pair of single use gloves. The phone, and any accessories, are then sanitized completely using a propitiatory cleaning solution that kills the Coronavirus without damaging any part of the phone.

Once the device has been thoroughly disinfected, our technicians then begin our lauded 70+ point check on the device. Once it passes, it’ll be marked for payment on our system, and automatically be paid out before 6PM.

When a phone leaves

When an order is placed, all the procedures for standard contactless handover to the courier are followed. Additionally, each phone receives a further disinfection pass, before being heat sealed and placed in a sealed courier bag.

This ensures that there’s no chance of any contamination during the process. Our courier never touches or handles the contents of the courier bag directly – only the sealed bag itself.

Buying Refurbished Tech

Our dedicated internal staff follow strict measures in line with the recommendations issued by the WHO. Additionally, our courier partners have put safe distancing measures in place for all deliveries. Along with constant hand sanitizing of their hands and wearing the required face masks, upon delivery the contactless process is as follows:

The Contactless Delivery Process:

  1. On arrival, the driver will ring the bell or intercom and announce their arrival and their intention to complete a delivery. They will also place the goods on the ground of the premises and for walk back to a safe sanitary distance (1,5m). This will allow the customer to safely pick up the parcel . The courier will then place the pre-filled waybill down and move back 1.5 m to allow the customer to sign acceptance of delivery.
  2. Dawn Wing no longer passes the driver’s scanner to the customer to capture a signature. Instead the driver will keep the scanner and after selecting the ‘contactless delivery’ option, they will request the name of the signatory which they will key into the name field on the handheld device. The driver will not capture the signature of the recipient on the device.
  3. Please remember to wash your hands before and after delivery. We also ask that you avoid direct contact with the courier, such as handshakes. This process applies to all collections and will remain in place until further notice.

Lastly, a big shout out from all of us at Flip Phone who are extremely thankful for the continued work of our healthcare workers!

If you have any questions during this tough time, please get in touch and we’ll gladly assist where we can.

Your cell phone on the chopping block?

We’re looking at why you need to upgrade your phone like yesterday. Besides from the cracked display leading to aggravated tapping and the joy when shards splinter your thumb.. here are our top 5 leading reasons why we should see you buying a phone today on Flip Phone.

Numero Uno: WhatsApp decided they don’t care about you.

The App has stopped supporting its software on a number of smartphones as of last December, where it took particular aim at Windows users or more specifically windows operating systems. If you are one of the chosen 2.4 million Windows phone owners ( you currently rep only 0.7% of the mobile phone market) then unfortunately you would have noticed your WhatsApp came to a sudden death circa 31 December 2019. Now all you iPhone and Galaxy folk reading this aren’t off the hook either … As of a few days ago, any device running IOS older than IOS7 and Android version 2.3.7 are also getting the chop . Now this sounds all very depressing but when you realise the age of these operating systems you’ll have a chuckle. We’re looking at the iPhone 5s and 5c from the Apple range and the Samsung S/ Nexus S. WhatsApp released a statement saying anyone using these older phones can no longer create new accounts or reverify existing accounts, the logic is quite simple says WhatsApp:”Because we no longer actively develop for these operating systems, some features might stop functioning at any time” .. Fair point.

Numero Dos: Phone Storage is crippling your App choices

Personally speaking, i’m not a big selfie fan so my phone isn’t riddled with the right side of my face (or left if thats your angle) but i do enjoy my apps and this is where the headache starts.. nothing worse than being told you dont have any space left for the latest dating app that could revolutionise the subtle art of cat fishing. But in all honesty, we are taking more photos and videos than ever before ( this was a great vid, glad the tannie had good storage..) and IOS are releasing more updates than JZ court cases.

Numero Tres: Wireless Phone Charging Coupled with Quick Charging

So the above heading is quite misleading from the point of view that wireless charging does not speed up the charging process compared to the archaic cable situation. It is a very cool feature however and in the case you forget your charger or break the cable, this is a very good feature to have on hand. It really makes life easier( we all have perfected the one hand cable from the phone removal but imagine saving that second as well as the energy).. priceless. Some really great news from Apple is the new and improved 18- watt charger gives you a 50% charge in 30 Minutes! Please note they only include these units in the iPhone 11 pro and pro Max boxes.

Numero Cuatro: You want a faster phone

The newly released iPhone 11 Pro Max was marketed to show off its A13 Bionic Processor, though you may see the odd A12 Bionic knocking around here and there. If you own an iPhone 7 or earlier, upgrading now will guarantee you see a speed increase, especially if you switch between multimedia apps and games. Faster speed means the ability to multitask between apps quickly and seamlessly without lag.

Numero Cinco: Battery Life Is vital and you’re currently suffering.

Do we realise how dependant we are on the little battery logo top right and the dopamine levels it gives us when full? Longer battery life means more usage throughout the day without needing to rush to your nearest plug point/computer to charge your phone. The newly released iPhone 11 Pro Max is the best of the iPhone range in terms of battery – sporting a 3,969mAh. But something to remember around devices with “promoted battery life” is that devices with QHD displays will drain battery life quicker than lower resolution displays but here is the kicker, battery capacity is measured in milliamp hours/mAh and the higher the mAh, the higher technical capacity BUT the devices with the highest mAh don’t necessarily have the best battery life! So be smart and do your homework.

So all in all, upgrading your phone doesn’t equate to purchasing a completely brand new device. Buying a refurbished phone is a far more sustainable way of upgrading without the environmental impact and price tag that will knock you out. Check out our range of refurnished devices as well as new/sealed today!

The New iPhone 11 Just Launched

Which one is for you?

So, Apple have just launched the new iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. There has been loads of hype over them, but are they for you? Here’s a look at the new iPhones, what’s new, and their specs.

The iPhone 11 and 11 Pro are priced significantly differently. The only real differences however, are the display, the camera, available colours, the battery and a better charger. That’s not to say you shouldn’t spend the extra money on the Pro or Pro Max, but you should know what you’re going to get for your money. Here’s how the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max stack up –

Design

Although priced the cheapest, the iPhone 11 is sized between the two Pro devices. Despite the three different sizes, they all share the same appearance. All three phones have a notched front display, all glass back and new square camera arrangement. The 11 however, features aluminum sides and a gloss glass back, while the Pro models features stainless steel sides and a matte glass back.

  • iPhone 11: 5.7mm x 150.9mm x 8.3mm
  • iPhone 11 Pro: 1.4mm x 144mm. 8.1mm
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max: 7.8mm x 158mm x 8.1mm

Display

The cheaper iPhone 11 has a slightly larger display than the Pro, but the quality is lower.  The 11 uses LCD tech while the Pro models use OLED technology. The superior OLED display will mean darker blacks and more brilliant colours.

  • iPhone 11: 6.1-inch Liquid Retina, 1792 x 828
  • iPhone 11 Pro: 5.8-inch Super Retina XDR, 2436 x 1125
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max: 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR, 2688 x 1242

Performance

All three models feature Apple’s new A13 Bionic Processor, so they have pretty much the same excellent performance.

Rear Cameras

Both the 11 and Pro have the same two cameras – 12MP wide ‘standard’ camera, and the brand new ultra-wide lens. The 11 Pro models boast a third, brand new telephoto camera, creating 4x optical zoom. There is a new night mode for taking images in extreme low light situations, new portrait mode lighting, next-generation Smart HDR and advanced auto image stabilisation. Plus, both 11 and Pro models snap wide and ultra-wide images each time you shoot, making it available to decide later on which one you would like to keep.

iPhone 11

  • Camera 1: 12MP wide, f/1.8, IOS
  • Camera 2: 12MP ultra-wide, f/2.4, 120-degree FOV

iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max

  • Camera 1: 12MP wide, f/1.8, IOS
  • Camera 2: 12MP telephoto, f/2.0, IOS, 2x optical zoom
  • Camera 3: 12MP ultra wide, f/2.4, 120-degree FOV

Battery & Charging

Here’s how Apple describes their new devices’ battery life, which is a significant increase from last years models:

  • iPhone 11: 1 hour longer than the iPhone XR
  • iPhone 11 Pro: 4 hours longer than the iPhone XS
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max: 5 hours longer than the iPhone XS Max

As far as charging goes, the 11 and Pro devices both have wireless charging as well as fast-charging via a 12W or higher power adapter. Only the Pro models include a 18W power adaptor in the box, whereas the 11 model only includes the standard 5W power adaptor.

Biometrics

All three phones have face ID for 3D facial recognition, that according to Apple, is 30% faster with better recognition from further distances.

Colours

The iPhone 11 comes in the colours seen in the XR, black, white, yellow and red, with the new addition of purple and green pastel shades. The Pro models come in the usual silver, space grey and gold, with the new stunning addition of midnight green.

Storage

All three phone’s storage is the same as 2018 models, starting at 64GB.

  • iPhone 11: 64GB / 124GB / 256GB
  • iPhone 11 Pro: 64GB / 256GB / 512GB
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max: 64GB / 256GB / 512GB

It’s quite clear that the iPhone 11 Pro Max is the best iPhone you can buy. But not everyone is willing to splurge for the features. Good thing that the iPhone 11 is significantly cheaper and offers comparable performance as well as good battery life and cameras of its own.

We’ve just gotten stock the iPhone 11, you can shop the device on our website or drop us a message and we’ll gladly answer any questions around which device is the one for you!

How to Buy a Refurbished Phone.

Certified Refurbished Pre-owned devices are becoming the new normal and making it possible for many to get their hands on the latest tech at a fraction of the cost. We’re breaking down the essentials you need to know when purchasing one.

What is a CPO refurbished device?

CPO in short translates to a certified pre-owned device, exactly the same concept as heading down to your car dealer and buying a certified pre-owned vehicle. A CPO refurbished device is one that has gone through extensive testing procedures evaluating the phones battery health, connectivity status, camera quality and more. Registered retailers also check that the device is not a stolen phone or that it has not been blacklisted. All the data perviously stored on the device is wiped off and reset back to it’s factory settings to ensure you get a phone that is as good as new.

Used Vs Refurbished phones

Used phones are devices that have been previously owned by an individual who now wishes to sell it. These devices do not go through tests and are not refurbished so you are not 100% guaranteed that the device is in its original working order. They are sold by individual sellers and do not come with any sort of warranty or guarantee so should anything go wrong with the device, you would have cover the cost of repairs. You as a consumer have limited rights in terms of protection against the device, should you not be happy with the condition in which the device arrives.

Buying a refurbished phone means that the device has gone through the necessary inspection and been completely wiped of all its previous data. These devices also often come with a warranty, so should anything go wrong with the device, it wouldn’t have to be repaired at your expense.

Purchasing a device from a registered reseller also protects your rights as a consumer under the Consumer Protection Act, where this might not be the case when buying from a private seller.

What to to look out for when buying a refurbished phone?

There are a lot of scammers out there trying to make a quick buck. To ensure you don’t fall victim to this crime, first go and read up about the retailer on social media, online blogs or even reviews to see if the company is legit. Also check to see if the device you are wanting to buy comes with a warranty, you don’t want to have to fork out money for damages when you could have just bought the same device new at a registered retailer.

Transparency is key! If the retailer cannot give you all the information pertaining to the device in terms of delivery, condition of the device or even any contact information – you might want to do more investigating or move on to another place.

What is the difference between the iPhone X and iPhone XR, XS?

Comparing Apples with Apples

On the 12th of September 2017, Apple sent brand loyal customers into a tech frenzy with the reveal of the next generation iPhone. The iPhone X. This iPhone is said to mark the tenth anniversary of the iPhone series  and many are calling it “the best iPhone to date”.

The innovation, however, doesn’t stop there. Fast forward a few months later, where many were left baffled at the announcement of three new iPhone devices set to hit the market. Cue the new 2018 iPhone models: the iPhone XS, XS max and XR.

One iPhone forward, three iPhones back

Picture this, you’ve just pre-ordered the iPhone X. Waited months to receive this revolutionary new piece of technology with its sleek design and one of a kind screen, only to discover that you’re already an iPhone behind. So the question posed today is whether or not it’s worth heading back down to your nearest retailer and upgrading to a newer model or hanging onto your much anticipated iPhone X.

As consumers we are not so much interested in the nitty gritty tech talk but more curious as to whether we made the right purchase or whether it’s time to reconsider. So what are the main differences between these different models?

The coveted iPhone XS and XS max

These two models are real powerhouses. They are the first of their kind, built using a 7nm process meaning that it is 15% faster than previous generations while at the same time using 40% less energy. In short, it’s a powerful beast.

In terms of battery life the XS max can last up to 25 hours while the XS doesn’t fall too short at 20 hours. Meaning more endless hours scrolling through instagram and Facebook.

The iPhone XR

Apple launched the iPhone XR with the intention of it being a “low-cost” version to its counter parts the X and XS. Coming in hot at a price point between R16 000 and R19 500.

The main difference between the iPhone XR, XS and X, is the display. The XR’s display comes in at around 6.1 inches which is a nice middle ground between the iPhone XS and XS max. To lower the cost of the phone, Apple opted to go for a LCD display instead of the revolutionary new OLED display.

In a generation where we are consumed by sharing every second of our daily lives on social platforms, camera quality has become a major factor when choosing a phone. Another major difference between the iPhone XR and XS is the camera. The XR only offers a single-camera lens while the Xs has dual sensor camera’s, meaning that features such as portrait mode might not be as crisp and clear as the more expensive iPhone XS and XS max.

On the outside the iPhone XR might seem slightly different with a wider variety of colour options, a single lens camera and a slightly larger screen, what really matters is what’s going on under the hood of this power machine. Similar to the iPhone XS and XS max, the iPhone XR also features Apple’s new A12 Bionic processor enabling users to experience a more powerful machine dynamic.

Since launch, it has been the top selling iPhone and we can see why. At a more affordable price you are basically receiving the same value as what you would if you had purchased the iPhone X or XS.

At the end of the day it boils down to what value you see in aspects of these various iPhones. If you don’t care much about the supersonic lens of the iPhone XS, not really interested in spending an arm and a leg on a phone, yet still want to feel part of Apple’s new revolutionary iPhone generation, the iPhone XR might just be the phone for you.

So what’s the moral of the story? Should you upgrade?

Well if you have R30 000 gathering dust somewhere, by all means splurge and “treat yourself” with the iPhone XS or XS max. However, the iPhone XR offers the same value at a more affordable price so if you’re an Apple fanatic that loves staying on the pulse but doesn’t really want to fork out so much dough, the iPhone XR is the ideal choice. So for those who still have the iPhone X and are looking to upgrade – there are plenty of platforms where you can sell your device and upgrade to newer apple generations.

What do the refurbished phone grades mean?

Now that you’re up to speed on what refurbished means and you know what kind of device you want to buy, it’s time to think about the grades. The condition of the phones are split into different grades to help you understand what to expect when you buy the phone.

At Flip Phone, we have a clear grading system for the phones we sell. This gives our customers a clear indication of what the phone will look like more than anything, as all of the devices are in full working order. So, we sell devices in:

  • Brand New / Sealed
  • Excellent condition
  • Very good condition
  • Good condition
  • Fair condition

This can also be split into grade A for Excellent, grade B for Very Good and grade C for Good condition. All our devices work as they should, but the visual aspect will vary.

  • An Excellent device is the closest you can get to a new phone without paying the price!
  • A very good condition device will only show light signs of wear and tear, but overall, it’ll be in really good cosmetic condition.
  • A good condition device will have moderate signs of wear and tear. There may be a scratch or two on the casing that would show it’s a refurbished device, but this is usually something that can be hidden by a phone cover.

Brand New/Sealed

Exactly what it says on the tin: brand-spanking new.

  • Phone Condition: new
  • What’s Included: any and all accessories typically provided by manufacturer, including headphones, user manual, and/or SIM card
  • Packaging: manufacturer packaging
  • Warranty: full manufacturer’s one-year warranty; review Flip Phone fine print for any and all applicable warranty information

Excellent

Excellent devices work like a new phone. They have been tested and certified according to four criteria: 1) functionality 2) cleaning 3) inspection 4) repackaging.

  • Phone Condition: like new (little to no wear)
  • What’s Included: generic charging cable and power adapter
  • Packaging: generic packaging
